This is Why Autumn is The Best Season
Updated: Jan 6, 2019
Autumn is my favourite season. Each leaf becomes a flower as the trees burst into flames of orange and red. It is also the best time to work on our skin.
During the heady days of summer our skin takes a beating. Beach days, summer holidays and outdoor activities expose our skin to free radicals. These molecules damage collagen and lead to tired, dull skin.
The good news is that autumn is the perfect time to have deeper skin treatments, the sort we need to repair and boost collagen levels. In autumn the sun's radiation is weaker and the days are shorter so we are exposed to less damaging free radicals. Deeper treatments can make our skin sensitive to heat but in autumn this is less of a concern. Downtime and side-effects are minimised. Despite all of this, autumn is the best time for skin treatments because gets us ready in time for December parties!
The best treatment I recommend for deeper skin rejuvenation is micro-needling. This harnesses the body's own healing power to boost collagen levels and repair the skin.
There are periods in our lives when we naturally increase our collagen production. One of these is after an injury or wound. Blood flows to the affected area, full of nutrients and growth factors. This kickstarts the production of new collagen, new blood vessels and new skin cells to heal the wound. Collagen levels can increase for up to two years post the original event.
Microneedling utilises small needles that penetrate the skin to simulate a wound and kickstart the body's healing response.
At Cosmetic Beauty Secrets, we use the gold standard and market-leading microneedling device, Dermapen.
Dermapen is a medically engineered skin needling device. It utilises 12 surgical grade micro-needles that that penetrate the skin to simulate a wound and trigger the body's healing response. Dermapen's micro-needles glide effortlessly over the skin, oscillating to produce 1300 rejuvenating micro-channels per second.
Dermapen's award-winning technology is able to produce results that are comparable to a fractional laser, without the risks of pigmentation changes and long recovery periods. It achieves this through vertical needles which minimise trauma to the uppermost layer of the skin and reduce the chance of scarring. Unlike heat-based therapies or deep chemical peels, the pigment-producing cells of the skin are not triggered into overactivity. As a result, Dermapen is safe to use on all skin types.
Dermapen's ability to harness the body's healing response ensures that it can be used to treat a plethora of skin conditions, including
Fine lines and wrinkles
The effects of Dermapen can be even more dramatic when combined with topical skin products or platelet-rich serum. This is due to the creation of micro channels, which allow topical ingredients to penetrate deep into the dermis layer, bypassing the dead and inactive skin cells on the surface. The best products are Vitamin C, Vitamin A, hyaluronic acid and copper peptides.
For those of us who are wary of needles, let me allay your fears. The needles used are smaller than those used to administer Botox. Treatments are fast and can be over in less than 20 minutes. Immediately after a Dermapen treament, patients appear mildly sunburnt, and this can persist for one-two days.
Improvements can be seen after just one procedure but the best results are after a course of 3-6 sessions. The effects have been so impressive that celebrities like Jennifer Aniston have micro-needling treatments as a core staple of their beauty regime. Kim Kardashian is particular fan of the Vampire Facial, of which microneedling is a core component.
The mild weather of autumn is a gift to our skin. Make sure you are taking advantage of it by treating your skin to what it needs most: deep rejuvenation.
