The Nose of Your Dreams
Updated: Jan 6, 2019
It's the first thing we see. It literally stands out. It's the focus of the face. It's the nose.
A well-balanced and proportioned nose lends harmony to the face, while humps and twists can be distracting on an otherwise attractive visage.
In an age when the average person will take 25,000 selfies in their lifetime, we have never been so conscious about our appearance and in particular our profile. This is because most selfies are actually taken at an angle, allowing us to highlight our bone structure and reduce the appearance of any asymmetry. One unintended consequence of the Instagram age is the heightened focus on our profile and hence our nose.
Traditionally having a nose job was a rather painstaking process. It involved a lengthy surgery, swelling, bruises, conspicuous bandages, and the results were permanent. For some patients, the worst bit is actually the permanent result. In fact up 20% of patients require a revision of their rhinoplasty because they aren't happy with the outcome.
Enter the Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty. This refers to strategic injections of hyaluronic acid, a natural and biodegradable product, into and around the nose. It can be peformed whilst the patient is awake, using only local anaesthetic and is relatively pain-free. It has minimal downtime, being over in minutes, and the results are immediate. Even better still the results can be tweaked and reversed.
The non-surgical nose job is one of the most rewarding treatments I perform because of its ability to transform a nose and enhance a face. This week's blog will examine five of my favourite noses to show that a little dermal filler can go a long way.
1. The Mild Hump
This is the most common concern. A slight hump on the upper aspect of the nose, usually only seen from the side. This can be corrected by using small amounts of dermal filler both superiorly and inferiorly to the hump.
It took me 10 minutes to achieve this result and the patient was awake throughout it all.
A bit more pronounced than the previous example. Instead of a hump, this nose curves downward, especially the tip.
By injecting hyaluronic acid to the base I was able to lift the tip and then sculpt the upper aspect of the nose. In some cases this may require small amounts of muscle relaxing injections to release the tip of the nose.
This client now has a straight and dominant nose, exactly what is expected in a masculine profile.
Here the nasal septum ( the cartilage that separates the two nostrils) is deviated causing the nose to twist to one side. This was such a concern for this patient, she would only take photos from one side.
To straighten the nose, dermal fillers were injected along either side of the bridge. This requires expert anatomical knowledge and precision to avoid the important blood vessels along the sides of the nose.
I'm glad to say that the client is now taking photos from all angles.
4. The Flat
When the nasal bridge lies flat to the face, it can be enhanced and lifted using dermal fillers. Traditionally this would be achieved using a cartilaginous implant harvested from the ribs or a permanent implant. Needless to say this would require a lengthy surgery with several weeks downtime. However by using dermal fillers I was able to create a raised nasal bridge within minutes, without the need for surgery. This can be tailored to the client or dissovled if she chooses.
5. The Trauma
When the nose has been injured the anatomy and blood supply can change due to the scarring associated with traumatic healing. This also applies to noses that have been previously operated on. As a result these cases can be more difficult and associated with more risks.
In this case the lower nasal cartilage had collapsed, but by placing dermal fillers along the side of the nose, I was able to recreate a smooth and more symmetrical shape.
It is important to highlight that even though the non-surgical nose job adds filler to the nose, it does not appear bigger. This is because as we balance the profile, it appears more harmonious with the other facial features. Conversely, the 15-minute nose job cannot decrease the size of the nose, or reduce the width of the nostrils.
The non-surgical nose job remains one of the most advanced aesthetic treatments and should only be performed by experienced practitioners. As with any treatment there are associated risks. You should be comfortable that your practitioner has the expertise and know-how to manage these in a timely manner.
